An Emory University comprehensive campus master plan included a review of existing conditions and projected future needs for the private research university located in Atlanta, Georgia. Leadership of the institution desired an evaluation of existing facilities’ condition and space utilization; present capacity for enrollment and program and projected future space needs for teaching, research, and student support space. HHK participated as a member of a multi-firm team led by Ayers/Saint/Gross of Baltimore, Maryland. The Plan addressed programming, land use, architectural massing, design guidelines and implementation strategies for all campus facilities. addressed space needs for distinguished undergraduate and graduate programs, a health sciences program, hospital, and health delivery system. In addition to ensuring coordination of the master plan with the University’s strategic plan, HHK directed data collection and analysis of academic programs and space needs, and participated in the preparation of the Master Plan, a Capital Plan, and an Implementation Plan. Implementation of the Master Plan recommendations has transformed Emory University from an auto-dominated campus to one that is pedestrian-friendly, green, and unified. This has been accomplished with revisions to vehicular and pedestrian circulation, building locations, removal and replacement of existing facilities, while adding 3.8 million SF of facilities and open space. |
